BACK PAIN – Lower, upper or mid back pain is seen in all age groups, from the age of 13onwards. Causes could range from poor posture, excessive stress, strain, lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle, tosleeping disorders, poor diet, etc.

Advice –People with demanding lifestyles should maintain a balanceddiet andproper seated posture (straight backed chairs with a shortbase, so backrests flat against the back of the chair and the feet areon theground). It is important to get up and walk every 20 minutes orat theleast to get up and sit down again. Avoid crossing the legs, andcut outany strenuous exercise until the pain and discomfort areminimized.

Obesityplays a major role, but losing weight rapidly could causemorediscomfort. Weight loss is a science and must be done gradually.Takethe advice of a trained nutritionist.
Today, many officeshave in-house gyms and fitness centers. It isnecessary to assess one’sstate of physical fitness and flexibilitybefore using the machines, doing aerobics, etc.

Starting an exercise regime:
InWeek 1, begin with a relaxed walk for 20 minutes and increase thepaceand the time gradually over the next four weeks. Swimming isstronglyadvised in week 2, with mild free-style stretches. If obesityand ageare major concerns, then stretches may be carried out on thebed. Afterweek 4, use the services of a trained physical fitnessprofessional andseek the advice of a dietician for a good, balanceddiet.

When an individualfacessuch discomfort and pain, exercise is not advised. However,Dr.Sarvotham recommends the use of a pillow, especially when sleepingonone’s side. The pillow contours the neck compensating the gapbetweenthe shoulder and the neck for a comfortable night’s sleep.
